Chess games

The history of modern chess goes back over 1,500 years. The royal game of Ur, in ancient Mesopotamia, appears to be the most distant ancestor of chess. Its boards date from around 2600 BC.

Today, chess is an abstract combinatorial board game for two players. Very popular, there are openings, tournaments, human champions, legends like Sissa's, chess standards and even the title of Grand Master of Chess. Humans even dare to play chess against super-powered computers like Deep Blue.

A design standard for chess pieces has also emerged. This is the staunton standardapproved by the International Chess Federation. Designed by Nathaniel Cooke, it was approved by English chess player Howard Staunton in 1849.
