The Suar tree or Albizia Saman can reach heights of 30 to 40 meters, and its crown a circumference of 40 to 60 meters. The grass is greener under this giant tree than elsewhere, because its leaves shade out the sun but retract when the light falls. This allows rain to reach the ground. This is where its nickname Rain Tree comes from.

Because of its impressive size and extensive canopy, the suar has the added advantage of capturing incomparably more CO2 than other species.

A study by the Bogor Agricultural Institute in Indonesia has shown that a suar tree with a crown diameter of 15 meters is capable of absorbing 28.5 tons of carbon dioxide per year at its peak, whereas an ordinary tree only absorbs 1 ton in 20 years.

It is for these qualities that numerous suar plantation programs have been launched in Asia since the 1990s. These trees have now reached maturity, can be harvested and replaced by new ones.

While not naturally as hard-wearing as teak, suar, if properly dried and protected, offers numerous advantages in every respect. Its fine grain, sinuous growth patterns and beautiful gradations from blond to brown make it a sublime wood for cabinetry.
